Paralympic judo debuted at the 1988 Seoul Games and the rules are the same as in sighted judo, with only a few exceptions. These include athletes having to maintain a grip on their opponent’s judo-gi, the name of the jacket and trousers that make up official uniform in judo.
Today, it stands as one of the most popular sports in the Paralympic Games and is governed by IBSA Judo.
Azerbaijan are Europe’s top performing nation in judo at the Paralympics. Ukraine, France and Spain also enjoy places in the top 10 of the all-time medals table.
