Table tennis is one of the founding sports of the European Para Youth Games, having been on the programme of the first edition in 2011.
Further back, Para table tennis debuted at the 1960 Rome Paralympic Games, initially featuring only wheelchair athletes. It has since expanded to include competitors from all physical impairment groups and intellectually impaired athletes, with events for both standing and sitting classes.
Para table tennis matches follow standard rules with minor adjustments, featuring best-of-five sets of 11 points each, and offer individual, doubles, and team events for both men and women.
The sport, governed by the International Table Tennis Federation and in Europe by the European Table Tennis Union, is now practiced in over 100 countries worldwide, making it the third-largest Paralympic sport by athlete participation.
European countries have delivered some of the best performances in the sport at the Paralympics with France sitting third in the all-time medals table. Austria, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden also enjoy a place in the top 10.
